As mentioned previously, next Tuesday night (July 29th) we're going to select the Oregon's first Citizens' Initiative Review Panel. You're invited to come watch and even help if you're so inclined.
The event will be next Tuesday July 29th at the Salem Public Library (Room Anderson B) @7pm - feel free to email or call us if you have any questions.
In a hair over two months we'll be running the Citizens'
Initiative Review demonstration. The dates are set, Sept 21 -25, as is the
location, Salem.
The past few weeks have been intense as we move through a couple of important
aspects of this project. Here are a few of the tasks we're currently working
on.
Earlier this month we began to recruit panelists for the CIR
demonstration. At the heart of the Citizens' Initiative Review is the panel of
24 randomly selected registered voters that will do the heavy lifting by
learning about and deliberating on a statwide ballot measure over a
We're excited to be giving a talk about Citizens' Initiative Review to the Eugene City Club, Friday, June 13th. City club is a great civic organization which hosts debates and discussions about candidates and important issues of the day, including ballot measures around election time.
In order to show the public how the CIR process works, we will be running a full demonstration of the CIR process
this fall. HDO's goal in running the demonstration at this point in time is to provide an opportunity to answer common questions about the process, run a full evaluation of our proposal, and really begin the discussion in earnest about making the CIR an official part of our initiative process.
The CIR demonstration will be held in Salem from September 21st through the 25th.
For
those of you checking out Healthy Democracy Oregon's new website for the first
time, welcome. For those of you returning to HDO's site, welcome back.
Over the next few months we'll be spending a lot of time here on the HDO
blog -- keeping you up to date on the Citizens' Initiative Review demonstration
(scheduled for 9/21 - 9/25 in Salem, more later), publishing research on
Oregon's initiative process, providing updates on the 2008 ballot initiative
cycle, and spending a good amount of time discussing the underpinnings of the
CIR and deliberative democracy in general.
This summer, as things heat up (both literally and figuratively) HDO
staff will be touring the state and engaging Oregonians from all walks of life
in a Listening Project. The Listening Project is an opportunity for Oregonians
to talk frankly, and uninterrupted, about the health of our democracy. The
project is currently underway, so check back soon for the first update.
As with all that we do, we encourage you to send us your feedback and
join in the conversation.
